Self-operated Barrier for Flood and Spill Protection (Bottom Hinged)

 

An innovation for the automatic protection of an area from flooding (flood barrier) or from preventing a liquid from escaping from a controlled area (spill barrier). The barrier is operated by the action of buoyancy only, requiring no human intervention and no power. The barrier consists of a bottom hinged liquid gate, disposed in front of the opening protected. The gate is normally flat with grade allowing unobstructed traffic passage over the barrier. On liquid approach the gate rotates automatically to upright position blocking the passage of liquid through the opening. This rotation is achieved by buoyancy provided by the liquid which is attempting to cross the opening. A buoyant body is disposed below the liquid gate so that it rotates in the opposite direction from the rotation of the liquid gate. On liquid approach the buoyant body urges the liquid gate to rotate.
